Epic Overland Adventures in North America

Discovering Adventure Close to Home

The concept of overland travel is evolving, making it more accessible to those who love vehicle-based exploration but may not have the time, funds, or desire to embark on year-long expeditions across continents. The beauty of overlanding North America is that world-class adventures can be found right in your backyard—whether it’s a long weekend, a week-long getaway, or a month-long trek. From the rugged deserts of Death Valley and Northwest Nevada to the lush forests of the Northeast and the dense rainforests of Southern Mexico, there’s no shortage of awe-inspiring terrain to explore.

Exploring the U.S.: A Land of Endless Overland Routes

Adventure Awaits Across the States

The United States offers an unparalleled mix of natural wonders, scenic drives, and off-road trails, making it a top destination for overland travelers. The National Park System is among the most spectacular in the world, and surrounding Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land often provides the best off-road trails, campsites, and panoramic views.

For those drawn to desert overlanding, the Mojave Road in the Southwest is a must, while California’s Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1) delivers breathtaking ocean views along a stunning paved route. On the East Coast, Vermont’s Class 4 roads offer a mix of rugged, less-traveled dirt routes, while paved gems like the Blue Ridge Parkway and Tail of the Dragon wind through scenic Appalachian landscapes.

Some of the Dalton Highway is beautiful smooth pavement, while other sections are pot-hole-ridden gravel.

Alaska: A True Overlander’s Paradise

For those seeking the ultimate remote adventure, Alaska is a bucket-list destination. This vast, rugged state boasts stunning landscapes, untamed wilderness, and legendary routes. While Mount Denali often takes center stage, lesser-known gems like the Kennecott Mines in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park provide just as much wonder with fewer crowds.

One of the most iconic overland routes in the world is Alaska’s Dalton Highway. Spanning 414 miles of mixed terrain, this epic route takes travelers deep into the Arctic Circle and to the northern terminus of the Pan-American Highway, the most famous overland route on the planet.

Canada: Expansive Wilderness and Untouched Terrain

Canada is home to vast wilderness areas and remote overland routes, making it a dream destination for those who crave adventure away from civilization. Western Canada is particularly known for its legendary routes, including the Dempster Highway, Mackenzie Highway, and the ALCAN (Alaska-Canadian) Highway—all of which provide incredible scenery and rugged terrain.

In the East, the Trans-Labrador Highway delivers an entirely different overland experience, with equally remote and stunning landscapes. Along the Great Lakes, travelers can discover a mix of historic small towns, rugged shorelines, and scenic backcountry trails.

For those looking for extreme overland challenges, British Columbia is the place to go. With towering peaks, deep valleys, and remote trails, it’s a true test for both vehicle and driver. Historic routes like Telegraph Creek Road, which follows the Grand Canyon of the Stikine River, provide a blend of history and adventure. This area also serves as a gateway to further expeditions into the Yukon and Alaska.

Mexico: A Diverse and Affordable Overland Destination

Unforgettable Landscapes and Rich Culture

For an affordable and culturally rich overland experience, Mexico is hard to beat. With stunning Mayan ruins, pristine beaches, dense jungles, and towering mountain ranges, the country offers an incredible variety of terrain. Travelers only need a passport, vehicle insurance, and a temporary import permit to explore this vibrant destination.

While Mexico has countless must-see sites, many hidden gems lie off the beaten path. Exploring lesser-known Mayan ruins away from tourist hotspots provides an intimate, awe-inspiring experience. Nature lovers should not miss Sumidero Canyon National Park, a 3,000-foot-deep canyon known as Mexico’s Grand Canyon, which can only be accessed by boat from Chiapa de Corzo.

The Baja California Peninsula: Off-Road Heaven

For overlanders, Baja California is an adventure playground all on its own. Whether arriving by ferry from mainland Mexico or crossing the U.S. border, Baja offers endless off-road trails, remote beaches, and rugged desert landscapes.

Classic Baja overland destinations include:

  • Mike’s Sky Ranch – A legendary off-road stop
  • Coco’s Corner – A famous waypoint on Baja’s rugged trails
  • Misión San Borja – A historic mission deep in the desert
  • San Juanico & Punta San Francisquito – Coastal gems with remote camping

If you want to push your 4×4 to the limit, try tracing sections of the Baja 1000 race course—a true test of vehicle capability and driver endurance. Just remember to carry plenty of water and fuel, as resupply points can be few and far between.
