I’m Cecil Sebastian, a resident of Ontario, California, but my roots are deeply embedded in the city of Walnut, California. As the co-founder and CEO of Mother of Mercy Homes Inc., my passion lies in providing exceptional care for individuals with developmental disabilities. In addition to my role at Mother of Mercy Homes Inc., I wear the hat of founder at CSS Consulting, where I serve as a Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional, ensuring top-notch consulting services for clients with developmental disabilities. This involves close collaboration with regional centers and the Department of Public Health, crafting personalized program plans for comprehensive care. Beyond the professional realm, my commitment to community involvement spans two decades as the head wrestling coach at Walnut High School. I dedicate my time to mentoring and coaching young athletes, contributing significantly to the Pounders Wrestling Club and nurturing the development of aspiring wrestlers in our local youth community. My commitment to community extends to volunteering with the Trail Wolves and Rodeo X Rigs movement over the past four years, aligning with my values of compassion and community involvement. Q. Before we delve into your 4Runner, could you share your journey in vehicle customization? How long have you been tinkering under the hood, and what sparked your initial interest? A. My foray into customization began in high school with a 1989 Toyota Camry, where my skills were limited to swapping out the radio head unit. I also had an interest in import race cars back in the day. When I was in college, my parents helped me buy a used 2002 Toyota Tacoma. I always wanted to upgrade it for adventure, but being a college student with limited funds, it was hard to do anything. Over the past four years I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of vehicles, especially a modern truck like my 4Runner. This hands-on experience has exposed me to various customization techniques and modifications, providing valuable insights and fostering a continuous learning curve. Whether it’s upgrading performance parts, enhancing aesthetics, or adding personalized touches, modifying cars has evolved beyond a mere hobby. It’s become a passion, enabling me to creatively express myself and shape a vehicle that mirrors my personality and interests. The biggest lesson I’ve learned about car customization is the importance of planning and setting a clear vision before starting any project. This includes outlining specific goals, budgeting effectively, and researching thoroughly to ensure that the end result aligns with my vision and expectations. Q. Beyond Toyota’s reputation for reliability and durability, what specific qualities or features drew you to the brand for your build? Did any particular Toyota models inspire you, or was it the 4Runner specifically that captured your imagination? A. As a longtime Toyota consumer, several factors beyond Toyota’s well-known reliability and durability solidified my choice for this build. First, Toyota’s rich heritage in crafting rugged and capable off-road vehicles is a major draw. Knowing my rig could handle diverse terrains and conditions with confidence was paramount. Second, its vehicles offer a compelling combination of off-road capability features, from advanced traction control to dedicated driving modes and navigation. These features enhance both safety and convenience when venturing off the beaten path. Finally, Toyota boasts a robust aftermarket support network with a vast array of accessories and modifications, perfectly suited for customizing my vehicle to achieve my vision. While I considered other Toyotas like the Land Cruiser and Tacoma, the 4Runner ultimately won me over. It offers the perfect blend of off-road prowess, on-road comfort, versatility, and a timeless design. Additionally, the strong aftermarket support allows me to personalize the 4Runner to align with my build goals. Q. What inspired you to build this specific 4Runner? Was there a dream trip, specific need, or personal preference that guided your modifications? A. The inspiration behind building this specific 4Runner came from a combination of factors. Firstly, my passion for off-roading and adventure played a significant role. I envisioned creating a vehicle that could handle rugged terrain and remote locations with ease, allowing me to explore with my family and friends. Additionally, personal preferences guided the process, whether it was selecting aftermarket components for durability and performance or customizing the interior for added comfort during extended drives. Every modification reflected my individual taste and vision. Overall, the inspiration to build this 4Runner was driven by a desire to have a capable and reliable vehicle aligned with my adventurous aspirations. Q. Take us through the build process. Can you share some highlights, challenges, and unexpected discoveries you encountered along the way? A. Building my 4Runner has been an awesome process filled with challenges, triumphs, and unexpected discoveries. From suspension upgrades to meticulously chosen off-road accessories, each step brought its own set of rewards and hurdles. One of the highlights was researching and selecting the perfect aftermarket parts. There are so many great options out there and choosing the right set up to suit my needs was part of the fun. However, the build wasn’t without its challenges. The installation process itself demanded patience and problem-solving skills. Initially, finding shops I trusted was an obstacle in itself and finding the right shops to turn my vision into reality was crucial. Kaizen Offoad and Aiden James Customs earned my complete confidence and trust through their expertise and quality work. Despite the bumps along the road, the journey yielded unexpected rewards. After delving deeper into the aftermarket world, I discovered an awesome community of enthusiasts. Through social media, local meetups, and events like Rodeo X Rigs, I connected with fellow 4Runner owners who generously shared their knowledge and experiences. This network not only provided invaluable advice but also fueled my desire to push the boundaries of my 4Runner’s capabilities. It became more than just building a badass rig. It became a journey of self-discovery and growth where I learned valuable skills, connected with a supportive community and fueled my passion to explore the outdoors. Q. Your IG handle is @trd_mamba_, can you elaborate on this? A. As a lifelong fan of Kobe Bryant, I was captivated by his on-court presence. Witnessing his dedication and unmatched skill set left an indelible mark on my childhood. Throughout his illustrious career, Kobe earned the nickname “Black Mamba,” a symbol of his relentless pursuit of personal excellence. His unwavering work ethic and determination to push his own boundaries continue to inspire me. Kobe’s journey fueled my own aspirations to become the best version of myself. It’s no surprise that my Instagram handle pays homage to my childhood hero. Just as Kobe strived for perfection in basketball, I aim to replicate his commitment to continuous improvement in all aspects of my life. Q. Can you share your favorite modifications to the 4Runner and how they enhance your off-roading experience? A. I love all the additions I’ve made, but my absolute favorite has to be the King Shocks/Total Chaos suspension system. The adjustability of the suspension provides unparalleled stability and control, and the longer travel allows me to navigate at higher speeds and handle rough terrains more smoothly. Plus, they add an amazing aesthetic with an aggressive look. For the rear bumper and rock sliders, I opted for Outgear Solutions, and they seamlessly integrate with the lines of the 4Runner. The ProSpeed Roof Rack caught my eye due to its sleek low-profile design, which also blends seamlessly and is highly intuitive and functional for loading and securing gear. When it comes to the wheel and tire setup, I aimed for both form and function, choosing Nitto Trail Grappler tires paired with Lifted and Driven LD97 forged wheels featuring custom beadlocks. They not only look perfect on the rig but also complete its stance. Lighting is one of my favorite additions as well. I specifically chose Rigid Industries due to their durability, visibility, and aesthetic appeal. They enhance my off-roading experience by providing reliable and powerful illumination whether I’m trailing in the dark or navigating through dusty scenarios during the day. It’s the only lighting company on my rig. For the audio system, I went with an OEM Audio+ system for two key reasons: its crystal-clear sound quality and the fact that it looks 100% stock, preserving all the interior cargo space. It’s an ideal choice for anyone seeking improved sound without sacrificing interior room. Additionally, I opted for the Carven Exhaust Dump Exit, which delivers an amazing lower, deeper tone at idle, cruising, and only gets aggressive during hard acceleration, making my rig sound like a beast. I’m completely happy with the current build of my 4Runner. Perhaps down the road, I’ll consider adding a supercharger for an extra boost of power. My intention is to cherish and maintain this 4Runner for as long as possible, it’s become my personal trophy truck. With my 2-year-old son reaching an age where we can explore together, I anticipate creating lasting memories on our adventures. Q. Tell us about your adventures: Where has your 4Runner taken you? What are some of your most memorable moments? A. My 4Runner has taken me on numerous adventures, and one of the most unforgettable destinations— Joshua Tree National Park. The park’s iconic Joshua trees create a surreal backdrop for trailing, and camping there with my family and friends was one of those moments I’ll never forget. Joshua Tree offers a ton of trails and hidden spots to explore, making it an awesome experience every time. Trona Pinnacles, often considered a hidden gem, provided a quick getaway and camping trip for my family. The rock formations in this unique location transport you to what feels like a different planet. It’s truly an amazing place. Another destination my 4Runner took me to is the Alabama Hills, nestled against the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada. It’s famous for its unique rock formations, and has served as the cinematic backdrop for countless films. Driving through the maze of rock formations was an awe-inspiring experience. Adjacent to the Alabama Hills was an old mine—an expansive cave that we navigated through in the 4Runner. Though the cave’s depth remains a mystery to me, the richness of history in the area adds another layer of fascination. I highly recommend exploring this captivating destination if you ever have the chance. Q. Have you ever gotten into a sticky situation out on the trail? How did your 4Runner help you overcome it, and what did you learn from the experience? A. One memorable adventure comes to mind when my brother and I decided to tackle the Lytle Creek trail after a fresh snowfall. Fortunately, Lytle Creek is just a short 30-minute drive from my place, and after a storm it became a winter wonderland. The excitement took an unexpected turn when we reached a dead end, leaving my 4Runner stuck in an awkward position on a steep hill. As I attempted to maneuver my way out, the weight distribution had my 4Runner leaning in a position that had me nervous as can be. It was an unsettling feeling of almost tipping over. At that moment, my brother called me on the Midland radio, advising me to stop and engage the Crawl Control system on my 4Runner. With a quick flick of the switch, my rig took charge, adjusting throttle and braking to carefully maneuver my way out. I watched my vehicle respond to the challenge, eventually pulling me out of the sticky situation. In the end, that snowy trail taught me valuable lessons: always be prepared, stay level-headed, and never underestimate the capabilities of my 4Runner when faced with challenging situations. And, of course, having comms is a must—communication is key when venturing off-road! Q. What advice would you give to someone looking to build their own adventure-ready 4Runner? A. Building an adventure-ready 4Runner is an exciting project that requires careful consideration and planning. Here are some specific pieces of advice to prioritize features, essential tools, and important considerations: Define Your Needs: First, identify your primary adventure style. Are you planning weekend camping trips, or aiming for more technical off-road excursions? This will guide your future modifications. Invest in the Essentials: A high-quality suspension system is key, tailored to your driving preferences and intended terrain. Upgrading to off-road tires is crucial—choose a durable brand with a tread pattern suited for your chosen paths. All-terrain or mud-terrain tires offer superior traction and durability compared to stock tires. My favorite brand that I use is Nitto. I’ve run Nitto for almost three years now and have been more than happy with their performance. Pack for the Unexpected: Essential recovery gear is vital for tackling challenging situations. Equip your 4Runner with a winch, recovery straps (like Spartan ropes), shackles, and a sturdy recovery board. These tools can help you navigate off-road obstacles and get unstuck if needed. Also, having a first aid kit, food supply and water is a must even if it’s just a day trip. Stay Connected and Informed: Reliable communication and navigation tools are key for safety and exploration. Consider a communication system like Midland radios to stay connected with your adventuring companions, especially in remote areas. Remember, the build process is a journey in itself. Take your time, do thorough research, and enjoy customizing your vehicle to suit your outdoor lifestyle and exploration ambitions. Q. What message do you hope your 4Runner sends to others? Is it about adventure, exploration, self-sufficiency, or something else entirely? A. The message I hope my 4Runner sends to others is one of versatility and rugged capability. It encourages me to seek out new experiences and push my boundaries. Beyond that, it also signifies self-sufficiency, as it’s built to handle a variety of terrains and challenges without compromising on comfort or reliability. Also the modification network is endless. Ultimately, it represents a lifestyle choice centered around embracing the outdoors, and being prepared for whatever the journey has in store for you. Q. Looking back on your completed build and the adventures you’ve tackled, do you feel your choice of the Toyota brand was validated? Are there any aspects where you might have considered a different brand initially, knowing what you know now? A. Choosing Toyota was absolutely the right decision. Whether tackling challenging trails, cruising highways, or going to meets, my 4Runner has consistently delivered. While there may have been alternative models and brands to consider initially, I am thoroughly satisfied with my decision to go with the 4Runner. Its proven track record and steadfast performance have undoubtedly validated my choice.
