Subscribe to our weekly newsletter First impressions are how much lighter they are compared to the previous combo we have been running. We mounted the AT3w’s to AEV 17×10 Katla aluminum wheels. These are traditional beaded rims, and are considerably lighter than the deadlocks just by the nature of robust build on the Trail Readys. The AEV/AT3w combo measures in a full 26lbs lighter per set than the MT/Beadlock combo and we can feel it while driving. Thanks to dropping 104lbs of rotational, unsprung mass off the driveline, acceleration and braking is improved dramatically. Additionally, the weight loss, along with the narrower tread and improved rolling resistance of the AT tread pattern vs the MT lugs, have also netted us a improvement of two miles per gallon on the highway. Intercity stop and go has remained unchanged due to just how heavy the truck is to begin with (7500lbs at current configuration) Next up is noise. A massive improvement over the MTs, these Falken wildpeak AT3w tires are quiet quiet quiet. Previously time spent on a road trip with the MT’s meant that they were all you heard on the highway. Making the noise go away was simply an exercise of turning the volume of the radio up. Now, with the AT3w’s, wind noise against the windscreen is the biggest distraction while driving at speed. All in all, at a thousand road miles – we are incredibly pleased with this new offering from Falken and can’t wait to put thousands more miles on them grinning ear to ear. Next time we will discuss off-road performance.
